GST reforms to ease refunds, registration for Delhi businesses

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday said proposed GST reforms would make tax compliance easier for businesses and taxpayers by simplifying registration and automating the refund process.

The Chief Minister participated in the 57th GST Council meeting at Bharat Mandapam and said the measures discussed by the Council would help create a more transparent, efficient and business-friendly tax system. Senior officials from Delhi’s Finance and Tax Department were also present at the meeting.

The CM said automation of GST refunds would help businesses receive their money on time. She said faster refunds would also improve the competitiveness of exporters by reducing delays in receiving funds.

For businesses shutting down operations, the Chief Minister said the proposed automated cancellation of GST registration would reduce delays and make the exit process easier for taxpayers. She also highlighted proposed changes to the GST registration system, saying the simplified process would particularly benefit small sellers operating through e-commerce platforms. The changes aim to streamline registration and reduce procedural hurdles for smaller businesses.

The Chief Minister said other proposed measures, including removing the power of arrest under GST and rationalising prosecution provisions, would contribute to a more favourable business environment. The Chief Minister added that the reforms would simplify the GST framework, make it more taxpayer-friendly and improve the ease of doing business.

The measures are expected to affect businesses and taxpayers at different stages of the GST process, from registration and compliance to refunds and closure of registrations. The Chief Minister said the reforms would make the tax system more responsive to the needs of taxpayers. Welcoming the proposals discussed at the meeting, she said the reforms aimed to simplify the GST system and make it more convenient for taxpayers.

The Chief Minister also said the changes could boost Delhi’s economic activity by creating a more supportive environment for businesses. She expressed hope that the reforms would add dynamism to the capital’s economy.

The CM said the proposed changes align with the broader objective of developing a transparent, efficient, and responsive tax regime. She also said the reforms would contribute to the national objective of achieving a developed India by 2047.
