Gill back on Top in ODI rankings; Sooryavanshi surges in T20Is
India captain Shubman Gill on Wednesday, July 29, reclaimed the No.1 spot in International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for batters in one day innings (ODI) cricket while young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi moved up a whopping 230 places to 48th in T20Is after his recent match against Zimbabwe.
Gill has replaced New Zealand batting mainstay Daryl Mitchell at the top spot in the ODI chart. Mitchell had held the top spot since January of this year.
"The top of the latest ODI batting rankings has changed after the West Indies vs New Zealand series ended. New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell wasn't part of the rankings update, and this allowed Shubman Gill to return to the No.1 spot among ODI batters. Mitchell had been the top-ranked batter since January this year," said the ICC.
Sooryavanshi, who hit two half-centuries during India's recent tour of Zimbabwe, where they played three T20Is. He scored 151 runs at an average of 50.33 as his team won the series by 3-0. The 15-year-old batter jumped up 230 places in the rankings to reach 48th place among the T20I batters.
Ishan Kishan, also from India, is currently ranked No.1 with 910 rating points. He had recorded the third highest batting rating of all time behind Abhishek Sharma (931) and Dawid Malan (919) when he reached 916 points after the end of the second T20I against Zimbabwe.
Despite losing some rating points, Kishan maintains a healthy lead over the second-ranked Sahibzada Farhan at 848 points.
“Sooryavanshi's rating of 536 points is well adrift of his more experienced teammates, but Kishan can now boast of having a better career batter rating than more accomplished Indian players like Suryakumar Yadav (912) and Virat Kohli (909),” the ICC stated.
Meanwhile, Tilak Varma moved up two positions to reach sixth while T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer jumped seven places to 24th.
Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi gained 31 positions to move to 41st in the list of T20I bowlers but Varun Chakravarthy who unfortunately, missed the Zimbabwe tour due to an injury, dropped three places but remained in the top 10 rankings.
Zimbabwe’s Ryan Burl rose six positions to reach 85th in rankings for batters while Blessing Muzarabani jumped 10 spots to reach 26th among bowlers.
West Indies' Justin Greaves also gained from his strong performance against Pakistan in the first Test. He bowled five wicket-maidens in a row in Tarouba, helping his team to beat Pakistan by 90 runs and take a 1-0 series lead that Pakistan can no longer overturn.
He also climbed 21 places to reach 48th among Test bowlers, and 9th among all-rounders in Test cricket.
Jayden Seales moved up to 24th place, while Pakistan's Mohammad Abbas, who also took five wickets in an innings, jumped to 17th.
Babar Azam reached 15th place after scoring an unbeaten fifty in the second innings.
