Former MLA PV Anvar vows UDF probe into LDF corruption if elected to power

Former MLA PV Anvar on Friday said a UDF Government, if voted to power, would be duty-bound to investigate the alleged corruption and wrongdoing of the incumbent LDF administration.
Anvar, who was elected as an LDF-backed MLA, resigned after falling out with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and later contested the recently held Assembly polls from Beypore constituency as a UDF-backed independent candidate.
He was speaking to reporters in the wake of reports that former Malappuram District Police Chief Sujith Das S had been given a clean chit in an internal probe into allegations of misconduct, including improper handling of cases, aiding gold smugglers and illegal felling of trees from the compound of his official residence.
In September 2024, after a phone conversation between Das and Anvar became public, the political leader levelled several allegations of misconduct against the officer. Following this, Das was suspended, and an internal inquiry was initiated.
Anvar said he was never heard during the inquiry against Das and would pursue legal action against the decision to close the probe.
“Only a notice was issued asking me to surrender my mobile phone, which I rejected. As the complainant, my Statement should have been recorded. Without hearing me and conducting any proper investigation, how could they end the probe?” he asked.
He said he feared that if the mobile phone was handed over, evidence would be destroyed.
Anvar alleged that certain police personnel in Malappuram district were involved in drug trafficking and gold smuggling activities.
“There was a written direction from Das that all shops near Karipur airport should be closed after 9.30 pm. It was to facilitate manipulation after snatching smuggled gold brought out from the airport,” he alleged.
Anvar further claimed that around 50,000 cases were registered against youngsters under Das’ direction to create a negative image of Malappuram, a district with a large minority population.
He said the developments had turned Malappuram into a subject of discussion even in Parliament and held Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Das responsible.
“Das created conditions for what the BJP and RSS wanted — to portray Malappuram as a criminal district and Pakistan,” he alleged.
Anvar said answers to all these alleged wrongdoings would begin to emerge after the Assembly election results are announced.
He claimed people had voted against Pinarayi Vijayan and what he termed “Pinarayism”.
“People voted to know certain truths. They want to know where Lord Ayyappa’s gold was diverted. The next Government cannot withdraw from that. People want to know who diverted gold smuggled from airports,” he alleged. He further claimed that even Communist supporters had voted against Vijayan and would help unseat the LDF Government.
“The UDF leadership will investigate all these matters. They will place the details before the people. Government properties that were stolen will be brought back,” he said.
