ED Director Rahul Navin gets one-year extension

The Centre has extended the tenure of Enforcement Directorate Director Rahul Navin by a year beyond August 13, according to a government order.
Navin, a 59-year-old officer of the 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre), has been leading the federal anti-money laundering agency as its full-time chief since August 14, 2024.
The order, issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Saturday, August 8, said it had approved an extension of Navin's tenure as ED director for one year beyond August 13, 2026, up to August 13, 2027, including an extension in service beyond his date of superannuation on July 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Under the rules, an officer can be appointed ED director for a tenure of two years, followed by three one-year extensions each.
Navin was made acting director of the agency in September 2023.
During his tenure, the ED has continued and launched several high-profile investigations, including those related to the political consultancy firm I-PAC, the Reliance Anil Ambani Group, and multiple online money gaming companies.
His tenure has also seen the agency focus on multiple cases of fraud by real estate developers against homebuyers, using powers under the anti-money laundering law to restore assets worth crores of rupees to victims.
The federal agency has additionally initiated processes to reduce long-pending litigation by getting adjudicated cases registered under the repealed Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) resolved, and by initiating compounding under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
Navin holds a B.Tech and M.Tech from IIT-Kanpur and an MBA from Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. He has also authored several books, journals and articles on international taxation and transfer pricing issues related to direct taxation.
The ED investigates financial crimes under two criminal laws the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA) apart from the civil provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
