Driver arrested for staging Rs 5 lakh robbery

Delhi Police has arrested a 42-year-old driver for allegedly staging a fake robbery at gunpoint to misappropriate Rs 5 lakh entrusted to him by his employer, an official said on Sunday.

Police said that they cracked the case within four hours of receiving the complaint and recovered the entire cash amount concealed beneath the bonnet of the car.

The accused, identified as Gurnaam Singh alias Happy, a resident of Tilak Nagar, was working as a driver and helper at a spare-parts workshop in Kashmere Gate for the past 10 years.

“During interrogation, he told police that he had been facing financial difficulties and hatched the plan to keep the money by fabricating a robbery story,” a senior police officer said.

According to police, a PCR call was received at Police Station KNK Marg on July 10 reporting that a bag containing Rs 5 lakh had been robbed at gunpoint by three unidentified men travelling in a Thar SUV near Dwarkadheesh Apartment in Rohini.

Police personnel rushed to the spot and met the complainant, who claimed that his employer had directed him to collect Rs 5 lakh from the workshop in Kashmere Gate and deliver it to Sector-14 in Rohini.

“He alleged that while he was on his way, his car was intercepted by three men travelling in a Thar SUV. According to his complaint, two of the assailants were armed with pistols and fled with the cash after robbing him,” the officer added.

Based on his statement, an FIR was registered and further investigation was launched. Considering the seriousness of the allegation, a special team launched an investigation.

“During the probe, the team examined the complainant in detail and verified his entire route using technical surveillance. The analysis revealed that no Thar SUV had followed or intercepted his vehicle at any point, contradicting his claims,” the officer said.

Despite repeated questioning, the complainant stuck to his version.
