Delhi Metro sets up exhibitions remembering Partitions at two stations

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has set up special exhibitions at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate metro stations to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, observed annually on August 14. The exhibitions will remain open for public viewing till August 21, 2026.

According to a statement issued by DMRC, the displays portray the horrors of Partition and its lasting impact on the country’s shared history. The corporation said the initiative was designed to highlight the agony and suffering endured by millions of people affected by the division of India.

The observance of Partition Horrors Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of what the DMRC described as the largest displacement of population in the country’s history, an event that claimed numerous lives and reshaped the nation’s social fabric.

The exhibitions aim to offer commuters a reflective and educational experience, providing deeper insight into the events surrounding Partition.

DMRC said the exhibition at Rajiv Chowk, one of the busiest interchange stations on the network, has been complemented by a similar display at Kashmere Gate, another major interchange point. The corporation said placing the exhibitions at these two high footfall stations would allow a larger number of commuters to engage with this chapter of history during their daily commute. The statement was issued by Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director, Corporate Communications, DMRC.

The initiative comes as several government bodies and institutions across Delhi organised events to mark Remembrance Day this year. Union ministries, the Delhi government and political parties held seminars, cultural programmes and exhibitions through the day to recall the events of 1947, when the partition of India led to the displacement of millions of people across the newly drawn border between India and Pakistan.

By placing the exhibition inside metro stations rather than a dedicated venue, DMRC’s initiative is aimed at reaching commuters who may not otherwise attend a formal remembrance event. Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate together see substantial daily passenger traffic, given their role as interchange stations connecting multiple metro lines across the city.
