Delhi approves new super-speciality block at GTB

The Delhi Cabinet has approved construction of a 250-bed Super-Speciality-cum-Trauma Block at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Dilshad Garden, East Delhi, for `244.87 crore, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced.

The seven-storey block will be built within GTB Hospital’s existing campus, eliminating the need for additional land purchase, and will come up under Phase-IV of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

The Chief Minister said GTB Hospital remains the only major Government hospital in East Delhi and continues to face a heavy patient load, with almost all its beds occupied at any given time.

She said this made it necessary to expand modern trauma facilities for accident victims and critical emergency cases. Once operational, the new block will offer critical patients 24x7 emergency and trauma care, specialist treatment, diagnostics, surgery and intensive care under one roof.

Spread across approximately 22,550 square metres, the block will comprise a basement, ground floor and six upper floors, housing 250 beds, 48 specialist OPD rooms and nine modern operation theatres.

The basement will house a blood bank and laboratory, while the ground floor will have a 24x7 emergency department along with CT scan, MRI and X-ray facilities. A 72-bed ICU will be located on the second floor, and the fourth and fifth floors will accommodate 175 general and private ward beds. The sixth floor will house offices, classrooms and a laboratory for doctor training.

Of the 250 beds, 20 will be dedicated to emergency care, five to the Burns ICU, 70 to ICU care, four to isolation, 22 to pre- and post-surgery care, 102 to general wards and 25 to private rooms. The block will offer specialist services including neurology, orthopaedics, dermatology and dental care, with 77 critical-care beds available overall for critically ill patients.

Diagnostic and surgical infrastructure will include CT scan, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound and laboratory services, alongside nine modern operation theatres and a blood bank with full storage facilities.

A monitoring committee comprising senior officials from the Central and Delhi Governments will be constituted to oversee the project, meeting every three months to review construction progress. The hospital block is targeted for completion and operational readiness by 2028.

The project falls under PMSSY, a Central Government scheme under which the Centre and State Governments jointly fund development of modern medical facilities in Government hospitals. The GTB Hospital trauma block is being constructed under this cost-sharing arrangement.
