CBI arrests Giribala Singh in Twisha case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday arrested former district judge Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed her anticipatory bail. A CBI team questioned Singh at her residence in Bhopal. The CBI involved two teams: one comprised of technical and forensic experts, and a team of women sleuths.

Twisha’s lawyer husband, Samarth Singh, is already in CBI custody (remanded till May 29). The agency will now interrogate and cross-examine the mother-son duo as part of its probe into the alleged dowry harassment and death. The arrest came after nearly seven hours of questioning at Singh’s residence in Katara Hills.

According to officials, the CBI team reached her house around 10.30 am and continued interrogation throughout the day before formally arresting her at approximately 5.10 pm.

In a detailed 17-page order issued late Wednesday night, the HC observed that, considering the seriousness of the allegations, available evidence and the ongoing stage of investigation, granting protection from arrest was not justified.

Twisha Sharma died under suspicious circumstances at her Katara Hills residence on the night of May 12, less than six months after her marriage to Samarth Singh on December 9, 2025. While her in-laws have maintained that she died by suicide, her parental family has alleged murder and accused her husband and in-laws of involvement.

On May 24, a fresh postmortem examination was conducted at AIIMS Bhopal by a team from AIIMS Delhi as part of the ongoing investigation. Following the procedure, Twisha was cremated at Bhadbhada crematorium, where her brother Major Harshit performed the last rites

Her family alleged that she was subjected to continuous mental and physical harassment for dowry by her husband and mother-in-law since the wedding. The Bhopal Police initially registered an FIR on May 15, 2025, under Sections 80(2) (dowry death), 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, naming Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh as accused.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed under Bhopal Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar. Samarth Singh was arrested by the SIT on May 22 from Jabalpur and initially remanded to police custody. Giribala Singh, a retired Bhopal district judge, was granted anticipatory bail by the 10th Additional Sessions Judge, Bhopal, on May 15, hours after the FIR was lodged.

On the recommendation of the Madhya Pradesh Government, the CBI took over the investigation on May 25, re-registering the state police FIR as its own case.
