Cabinet approves Rs 62,500 crore mobile phone manufacturing scheme to boost exports and jobs

The Union Cabinet has approved the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) with an outlay of ₹62,500 crore over the next five years to strengthen India's position as a global mobile manufacturing hub. The initiative aims to increase domestic production, boost exports, attract fresh investments, and generate large-scale employment in the electronics sector.
The scheme is expected to build on the success of earlier production-linked initiatives that helped India emerge as one of the world's leading mobile phone manufacturing centres. By encouraging both domestic and global companies to expand operations in India, the government hopes to deepen the local supply chain, increase value addition, and reduce dependence on imports. The programme also aligns with the broader 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives.
Officials believe the MPMS will play a crucial role in enhancing India's competitiveness in the global electronics market while creating new opportunities for component manufacturers, suppliers, and skilled workers.
The approval comes alongside the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0, reflecting the government's strategy to build a comprehensive electronics manufacturing ecosystem and position India as a major global technology production hub.
