Audible announces sci-fi adaptation of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’ with Andy Serkis

Homer’s ancient epic “The Odyssey” is set to get a science-fiction makeover, with Audible announcing a new audio adaptation written by acclaimed novelist Adrian Tchaikovsky and narrated by actor Andy Serkis.

Titled “Odysseus Rising”, the Audible Original reimagines the 3,000-year-old tale of the Greek warrior’s journey home as an interstellar adventure.

The project, which has been in development since late 2024, brings together Tchaikovsky, author of the “Children of Time” series, and Serkis, known for his work in “The Lord of the Rings” and “Planet of the Apes” franchises, the audio platform said on Thursday.

The adaptation combines the original story with immersive sound design and Dolby Atmos technology to transport the epic into the realms of space and time.

“Taking on a project like this was a real challenge,” Tchaikovsky said, adding that exploring the gods, monsters and the hero’s journey through the traditions of science fiction was a privilege.

Serkis described Tchaikovsky’s reinterpretation as “a staggering act of ingenuity”, saying that moving the ancient story into the distant future gives it new life and meaning.

Aurelie de Troyer, Head of Audible Content, International, said the platform was “privileged” to bring together two prominent voices in science fiction for the project.

According to the official synopsis, the story begins after a decade of war in Ilium, now a ruined world of ashes.

The Ithaca, a ship controlled by oligarchs and parasites, awaits the return of its captain. Carrying the burden of duty and the dead, Odysseus begins his journey home while defying the Gods.

But when he is doomed to never reach his people’s safe harbour, Odysseus must find a way to bring the Ithaca to him, setting him on a journey not only through space but deep into time.

“Odysseus Rising” will be available exclusively on Audible from February 25, 2027.

The project comes months after Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey”, starring Matt Damon as the battle-weary warrior, brought Homer’s epic to the big screen.
