Assam flood toll climbs to 105 as situation eases, over 32,000 still affected

The flood situation in Assam showed improvement on Monday, August 17, even as one more death was reported, taking this year's toll to 105, while nearly 32,000 people remained affected across four districts, officials said.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in a bulletin that a person drowned in flood waters in Sivasagar district, adding to the season's death count.
More than 31,900 people are currently affected in Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts, according to the authority. Nagaon remains the worst-hit district with nearly 20,000 people impacted, followed by Jorhat with over 5,000 and Sivasagar with more than 4,500 affected.
The overall situation has eased since Sunday, August 16, when close to 52,000 people were affected across five districts, the bulletin said.
To support those displaced, the administration is running 15 relief camps and distribution centres across four districts, providing assistance to 2,782 affected people, ASDMA said.
The bulletin further stated that 147 villages remain submerged and 3,198.77 hectares of crop area have been damaged across the state. Flood waters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in various districts.
Additionally, 16,323 domestic animals and poultry have been affected by the widespread flooding, the authority said.
