Amazon expands India network ahead of festive season, adds 20 fulfilment centres, 150 delivery stations

E-commerce major Amazon on Monday announced an expansion of its operations network across India ahead of the festive season, adding 20 fulfilment centres, six sort centres and 150 last-mile delivery stations.

The expansion is part of Amazon's previously announced investment of more than Rs 2,800 crore to strengthen its pan-India operations and infrastructure, the company said in a statement.

With the new facilities, Amazon's total storage capacity in India will rise 50 per cent to 64 million cubic feet. The facilities will be operated and managed by third-party logistics service providers.

The six new sort centres are coming up in Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Meerut, Ramanagar, Raipur and Varanasi, while seven of the 20 new fulfilment centres are also being established in non-metro cities.

The company said the expansion will help it prepare for the expected surge in consumer demand during the festive season.

Amazon had earlier announced more than 1.6 lakh seasonal work opportunities across 400 cities, including metropolitan areas as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations, to meet the anticipated increase in demand.

The 150 new last-mile delivery stations will be spread across 118 cities. Twelve locations -- Bhojpur, Bokajan, Jalaun, Jehanabad, Namsai, Puruliya, Ribhoi, Senapati, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Ukhrul and Wokha -- will get their first Amazon last-mile delivery station.
