AIR Aizawl played key role in preserving Mizo language, says Mizoram home minister

Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga on Friday hailed All India Radio (AIR) Aizawl as one of the foremost institutions in preserving the Mizo language and served as a guide for younger generations in the correct use of the language.

Speaking at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of AIR Aizawl held here, Sapdanga highlighted the station's enduring legacy in safeguarding Mizo heritage and preserving the community's core identity.

He noted that despite rapid technological shifts and a modern landscape where face-to-face human interaction is increasingly limited, radio continues to adapt and offer vital connections.

"AIR Aizawl has remained a source of comfort and encouragement for people facing hardship," the home minister said, emphasising that its broadcasts reach even the most remote areas to inform, educate, and guide the public.

The occasion was doubly significant as All India Radio marks 90 years nationally alongside AIR Aizawl’s 60th anniversary.

Sapdanga noted that radio still holds a cherished place in the hearts of Mizoram's people as a trusted source of credible news, a daily companion, and a platform that has nurtured generations of local talent.

He added that AIR empanelled artists continue to command immense respect among musicians across the country.

To mark the milestone, the Home Minister unveiled a commemorative plaque and released the Diamond Jubilee souvenir.

Earlier in the program, AIR Director and Mizoram Cluster Head DR Lalropuia reflected on the station’s history.

Established on July 31, 1966, during a period of regional political unrest, AIR Aizawl was created to provide reliable information and enhance public safety, he said.

Lalropuia emphasised that the station has grown far beyond a news outlet, acting as a bridge between the government and the public in Mizoram's development.

Urging staff to maintain their dedication, he called on the team to ensure the station continues to evolve alongside changing times.

AIR Aizawl currently operates with a workforce of more than 300 employees.
