AI cameras help police identify suspects in CJP protest violence

Delhi Police has begun using its network of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled surveillance cameras to identify people allegedly involved in the violence that erupted during the CJP protest earlier this week, with investigators saying those found responsible for attacking police personnel or damaging public property will face legal action.

According to police sources, AI-powered cameras installed across the New Delhi district are being used to analyse CCTV footage and identify individuals who allegedly participated in clashes with security personnel, vandalised government vehicles or assaulted police officers.

Officials said the identities of those flagged by the surveillance system will be verified using police databases to check for any criminal history before further action is taken. Police maintained that those who participated in the protest peacefully have “nothing to worry about,” while urging citizens to share information about people involved in the violence. Officials assured that the identities of informants would remain confidential.

“There is an extensive CCTV network across New Delhi. Every person found involved in the clashes will be identified, their background verified and action will be taken on the basis of evidence,” a senior police officer said.

The investigation has so far led to the registration of 10 FIRs across multiple police stations in the capital. Four cases have been lodged at Parliament Street Police Station, three at Connaught Place Police Station, and one each at Mandir Marg, Barakhamba and Kartavya Path police stations.

Among these is an FIR lodged based on the complaint of a Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel who was allegedly assaulted by protesters during the violence.
