3 killed, more than a dozen injured in Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv

At least three people were killed and more than a dozen injured after Russia launched a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones on Kyiv overnight, damaging residential buildings and sparking fires across the Ukrainian capital, local authorities said on Saturday.

A five-storey residential building in the Solomianskyi district was damaged by falling debris, with people believed to be trapped inside, while a fire broke out in the courtyard, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said.

Rescue efforts were also under way in the Shevchenkivskyi district after part of a residential building collapsed, leaving people trapped. In the Darnytskyi district, warehouse buildings caught fire following the attack.

The strike came two days after a large-scale Russian missile and drone assault across Ukraine killed 10 civilians, injured more than 50 others and briefly sent a Russian missile into Polish airspace.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine's need for additional Patriot air defence systems to counter Russian ballistic missile attacks. He said he had discussed the issue with US Vice-President JD Vance following his meeting earlier this week in Washington with President Donald Trump.

"Russian air strikes on our country continue and air defence, specifically interceptors for Patriot systems against ballistic missiles, remains a top priority," Zelenskyy said.

Although Trump said at a NATO summit in Ankara in July that the United States would license Ukraine to manufacture Patriot systems, he told a Cabinet meeting on Friday that no final decision had been made.
