Shivakumar inspects Mangaluru fishing harbour, hears fishermen’s demands
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday visited the Mangaluru fishing harbour early in the morning, inspected its operations and interacted with fishermen, fish traders and representatives of local trade associations.
Accompanied by Health Minister and Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge U T Khader, local leaders and members of the Dakshina Kannada Trawl Boat Fishermen’s Association, Shivakumar reached the harbour around 5 am and walked through the jetties and docking areas.
The chief minister examined the day’s catch and sought details from fishermen and officials about fishing activities, harbour facilities and the challenges faced by the fishing community. Representatives also submitted a list of demands concerning infrastructure and livelihoods.
Shivakumar said the government would examine their concerns and work towards finding permanent solutions. He also said demands relating to dredging the estuary mouth, locally known as Alve Bagilu, and resolving boat parking issues would be considered.
During the visit, Shivakumar took note of reports that regular trading activities at the harbour had been disrupted following his arrival. He directed the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner and Mangaluru police commissioner to submit a report, saying action would be taken against officials if it was found that normal harbour operations were unnecessarily halted because of security arrangements.
The visit followed Friday’s state Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru, where several coastal development proposals were discussed. These included plans for a dedicated university focused on maritime studies, fishing culture and the blue economy, along with increased capacity in maritime education.
The government has also proposed passenger and cargo water transport initiatives, including a sea metro project, to improve coastal connectivity. Shivakumar said measures to improve facilities for fisherwomen, provide specialised hospital testing and make dedicated ambulances available would also be examined.
