Senior Cong MLA T B Jayachandra appointed pro-tem Speaker of Karnataka Assembly

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Monday, August 3, appointed senior Congress MLA T B Jayachandra as pro-tem Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly until a permanent Speaker is duly elected by the House.

Currently, the posts of Speaker and Deputy Speaker are vacant and are likely to be filled during the monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature, which will begin on August 13

"Hon'ble Members are hereby informed that in exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of Article 180 of the Constitution of India, the Hon'ble Governor of Karnataka has appointed Sri T.B. Jayachandra, Member of Legislative Assembly to perform the duties of the Office of the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly with effect from 03.08.2026 until a Speaker is duly elected by the House," the Assembly bulletin said.

The Speaker's post fell vacant following the induction of U T Khader into the cabinet on June 3. Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani was subsequently officiating the Speaker's role.

On Monday, during the cabinet expansion, Lamani was inducted into the Chief Minister D K Shivakumar-led cabinet.

The Congress high command has also approved the names G S Patil to be the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and A S Ponnanna to be Deputy Speaker.
