Science is powering India’s next agricultural revolution

Agriculture has entered a new scientific era. The future of farming will no longer be determined solely by the quantity of fertilisers applied, but by the efficiency with which plants utilise nutrients, the biological health of soils and the intelligent application of biotechnology.
Around the world, agriculture is moving from chemistry-driven production systems towards biology-enabled, precision-based farming that enhances productivity while protecting natural resources. As concerns over soil degradation, climate change, declining nutrient efficiency and food security continue to intensify, scientific innovation is emerging as the most powerful driver of sustainable agricultural growth. The global biofertilizer market reflects this transformation. It is expanding rapidly and is projected to reach nearly US$1.6 billion by 2030. Countries across the world are increasingly investing in biological agriculture as they seek technologies capable of simultaneously improving crop productivity, restoring soil health and reducing environmental stress. India possesses a unique opportunity to lead this global transformation. With world-class scientific expertise in agricultural biotechnology, microbiology, microbial ecology, soil science and precision farming, the country has developed several breakthrough technologies capable of fundamentally transforming nutrient management. Among the most promising innovations is the Multi Nutrient Efficiency Bio Fertilizer Technology, scientifically validated by Maharashtra based Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidhyapeeth and Dr Balasawant Krishi Vidhyapeeth, Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in India and globally by All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Rice Growers Association, Togo, West Africa, Benin Rice Growers Association, West Africa and West Jawa, Indonesia using patented microbial consortia containing multiple beneficial bacterial strains capable of improving nutrient uptake from both native soil reserves and applied fertilizers.
Unlike conventional microbial products containing a single microorganism, microbial consortia combine several complementary microorganisms that function synergistically to improve nutrient availability, stimulate root architecture, strengthen soil microbial ecology and enhance overall nutrient use efficiency. Advanced microencapsulation technology further extends shelf life to nearly two years while ensuring sustained release of beneficial microorganisms following field application. Scientific studies have reported nearly a 20 percent increase in cotton yield despite reducing chemical fertiliser application by 25 percent, approximately an 8 percent increase in maize productivity, 12 to 13 percent higher paddy yields under different cultivation systems and significant productivity improvements in Bengal Gram. These findings demonstrate an important scientific principle: higher agricultural productivity does not necessarily require greater fertiliser consumption. Rather, efficient nutrient management through advanced biological technologies can simultaneously enhance yields, reduce cultivation costs and restore long-term soil fertility. This assumes national importance because nearly 50 percent of India’s fertiliser consumption is concentrated in only four crops namely Paddy, Cotton, Maize and Bengal Gram. Furthermore, more than 75 percent of fertiliser consumption occurs in just ten States. Improving nutrient use efficiency in these major crops alone has the potential to generate enormous economic, environmental and ecological benefits for the nation. India therefore stands at the threshold of a new agricultural revolution where biology, biotechnology, microbial sciences and precision agriculture are gradually replacing excessive dependence on chemical inputs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently maintained that the future of Indian agriculture lies in restoring soil health while improving farmers’ prosperity. His government has therefore adopted a balanced and science-based approach that does not advocate the complete replacement of chemical fertilisers overnight. Instead, it promotes balanced nutrient management by integrating biofertilisers, nano fertilisers, organic inputs and precision farming with conventional fertilisers.
Balanced fertiliser management is not merely an agricultural reform; it is also an important economic reform. India spends approximately Rs 1.71 lakh crore annually on fertiliser subsidies. Scientifically validated technologies capable of reducing fertiliser consumption by even 25 percent without compromising productivity can generate substantial savings for the national exchequer. These savings can be redirected towards agricultural research, irrigation infrastructure, farm mechanisation, digital agriculture, climate adaptation and rural development. Like the Indian IT Industry boom, for Indian Agricultural Biotechnology boom to happen, private players with strong scientific foundation need to be supported for faster and adoption in scale in the larger interest of farmers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly reminded the nation that agriculture cannot prosper by exhausting Mother Earth. His government’s emphasis on balanced fertiliser use, Soil Health Management, Nano Fertilisers, Neem Coated Urea, PM PRANAM, ICAR research and promotion of biofertilisers reflects a long-term vision that combines scientific innovation with ecological sustainability. Reduced fertiliser consumption also lowers India’s dependence on imported raw materials, strengthens supply chain resilience, improves foreign exchange savings and enhances national food security. Most importantly, lower cultivation costs combined with higher productivity directly contribute to the Government’s objective of increasing farmers’ income.
The future of Indian agriculture lies not in applying larger quantities of chemical fertilisers but in applying greater scientific knowledge, biotechnology, precision agriculture and innovation. India now has a historic opportunity to emerge as a global leader in sustainable agriculture. By embracing biofertilisers, microbial biotechnology and advanced biological innovations, the country can build an agricultural system that is highly productive, economically profitable, environmentally responsible and resilient to climate change.
The journey from Food Security to Soil Security has already begun. Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is laying the scientific foundation for an agricultural model that not only feeds the nation but also regenerates its soils, empowers its farmers, strengthens long-term food security and preserves Mother Earth for generations to come.
