SAIL posts strong sales and production in August 2026

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has reported strong growth in sales and production during August 2026, with its financial position also strengthening.
The company achieved its best-ever August production of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel. Crude steel production rose 8 per cent year-on-year to 1.68 million tonnes (MT), compared with 1.55 MT in August 2025. Hot metal production increased 9 per cent to 1.78 MT from 1.63 MT, while saleable steel rose 1 per cent to 1.69 MT from 1.66 MT.
SAIL recorded a 13 per cent year-on-year increase in overall sales volumes during August, reaching 1.871 MT compared with 1.654 MT in the corresponding period last year. Cash collections also grew 23 per cent.
The company registered its highest-ever August sales in several value-added product categories, including cold rolled, galvanised and alloy steels. Inventory levels also declined, indicating improved supply chain coordination and faster market servicing.
Rail supplies to Indian Railways increased 5 per cent year-on-year to 1.23 lakh tonnes from 1.18 lakh tonnes. Supplies of long rails reached a record 1.12 lakh tonnes, registering 11 per cent growth.
SAIL also strengthened its financial position by reducing borrowings by Rs 870 crore from the March 31, 2026 level.
During April-August 2026, cumulative sales stood at 7.71 MT, registering 5.6 per cent growth over the corresponding period last year despite global volatility. Finished and processed steel segments continued to witness healthy movement, supported by an improved product mix, stronger regional outreach and firm domestic demand.
Commenting on the performance, SAIL Chairman and Managing Director AK Panda said the results reflected growing alignment between operational capability, commercial delivery and financial prudence.
He said record production, strong sales momentum and disciplined financial management underscored the company’s strengthening fundamentals. With expansion projects progressing and the demand outlook remaining positive, SAIL is well positioned to accelerate its growth trajectory while contributing to India’s steel consumption story.
