Rise above politics to serve people, Birla tells lawmakers

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday urged lawmakers to rise above personal and political interests, emphasising that elected representatives must act with integrity to translate public expectations into concrete actions.
Inaugurating the first CPA India Region Zone VII Conference in Goa, Birla noted that upholding citizens’ trust requires unwavering commitment to public welfare. Addressing the roles of emerging leaders, he stated that young lawmakers carry a pivotal responsibility in realising the vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047 through innovative policies and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
“Parliamentary democracy is globally recognised as the best system of governance,” Birla said, adding that the steady increase in voter turnout since 1952 reflects India’s success as a vibrant democracy. He called for healthy competition among State legislatures to promote good governance and suggested that States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa should share best practices, particularly in coastal development.
Emphasising the digital transition, the Speaker remarked that while artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool, “human sensitivity remains essential.” He urged legislators to harness technology to address grievances while maintaining empathy and goodwill.
Birla also stressed the importance of mastering legislative rules, observing that those who engage in thoughtful discussions often emerge as prominent leaders. “The more legislators familiarise themselves with processes, the more effective their participation will be,” he noted.
Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairperson Ram Shinde, and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar also addressed the occasion. Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar delivered the Welcome Address on the occasion. Goa Legislative Assembly Deputy Chairman Joshua D’Souza delivered the Vote of Thanks.
