Dalit woman assaulted and prevented from fetching water from well in Jharkhand, 5 booked

Ranchi police have registered a case against five people, including four members of a family, for allegedly assaulting a Dalit woman, hurling casteist slurs at her and preventing her from drawing water from their well, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident reportedly took place on October 10 in Sector 2 of HEC Smart City, under the jurisdiction of Jaggannathpur police station. The woman, identified as Manju Choudhary, lodged a complaint with the police on the same day, a senior officer said.
The officer added that members of the accused family also filed a complaint on Monday, alleging that Choudhary had assaulted them.
Jaggannathpur police station officer-in-charge Nitin Kumar Singh said a case had been registered on the basis of Choudhary’s complaint under relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The accused have been identified as Amrendra Kumar, his wife Remi Devi, their two sons and another person, he said.
According to the woman’s complaint, the five accused, who live near her house, had been preventing her from drawing water from their well since July 23. She alleged that they assaulted her and used casteist slurs against her on October 10.
Police conducted an investigation and found that the well was situated on the premises of Amrendra Kumar’s house, the officer said.
However, the allegations of assault and humiliation are still being investigated. Appropriate action will be taken against the accused after the probe is completed, he added. (with inputs from PTI)
