Inmate shoots jail guard with country-made pistol in MP’s Raisen, held
A jail guard was seriously injured after an inmate allegedly fired at him with a country-made pistol in an attempt to escape from the district jail in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen on Wednesday morning, police said.
The incident took place during Raksha Bandhan celebrations inside the jail.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pratibha Sharma, the inmate, identified as Nilesh Thakur, was lodged in the jail in an attempted murder case.
During the celebrations, Thakur approached the main gate carrying a basket of fruits and pressured jail guard Digvijay Singh Tomar to open it, Sharma said.
When Tomar refused, Thakur allegedly pulled out a country-made pistol concealed inside the fruit basket and fired at him.
The bullet struck Tomar on the left side of his back, seriously injuring him. He was given first aid at the district hospital and later referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, for further treatment, the official said.
Jail Superintendent R K Choure and other guards rushed to the spot after being alerted and apprehended Thakur, Sharma said.
Police inspected the scene, registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
The police are also probing how the illegal firearm entered the jail and whether anyone else was involved.
“This is a very serious matter. Security arrangements inside the jail are being monitored. The role of the jail guards is also being investigated,” Sharma said.
When asked about how the weapon entered the jail, Choure said he had no information about it. He suspected that the pistol could have been concealed in one of the baskets of fruits or sweets brought inside during the Raksha Bandhan celebrations.
Further investigation is underway.
