Police register six FIRs, detain 100 in CJP protest crackdown
Delhi Police has intensified its crackdown on protestors following the violence during the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) march to the Parliament on Monday, registering six FIRs and detaining nearly 100 people as investigators continue to identify those involved through CCTV footage, drone videos and other digital evidence.
Police officials said those detained so far are not students and that all the FIRs have been registered against unknown persons.
The cases have been lodged at Parliament Street, Connaught Place and other police stations under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to police sources, the FIR filed at Parliament Street cites BNS Sections 223(b), 221, 132, 121(1), 189(3), 190, 191(2), 191(3), 192, 324(5), 109(1), 125, 3(5) and 61(2), along with the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
The FIR states that the accused allegedly formed an unlawful assembly, disrupted public order, obstructed Government officials, took part in violence and damaged public property.
The principal FIR registered at Parliament Street Police Station invokes multiple provisions of the BNS, including those dealing with unlawful assembly, rioting, criminal conspiracy, assault on public servants, obstruction of official duty, acts endangering human life and common intention. The case also includes Section 25(1AB) of the Arms Act and Section 3 of the PDPP Act.
Another FIR was registered against unidentified people for violence, stone-pelting, and vandalism of police vehicles near Regal Cinema at the Outer Circle of Connaught Place during the march, the source added.
Yet another FIR relates to the alleged unauthorised use of a drone in the New Delhi district during the Parliament session. CJP’s official social media handle uploaded the drone footage. Another concerns an alleged conspiracy behind the violence, with investigators claiming to have recovered crucial evidence indicating that the unrest may have been planned. Two other FIRs pertain to obstruction of Government work, assault on police personnel, vandalism and damage to public property.
Police are also preparing two additional FIRs invoking provisions related to assault, taking the law into one’s own hands and other offences under the BNS.
Another FIR pertains to alleged stone-pelting and vandalism near Regal Cinema in Connaught Place, where protesters allegedly attacked police personnel and damaged several police vehicles.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage, drone recordings, mobile phone videos and social media content to identify those involved. A senior police officer said further legal action would be taken against anyone found responsible for assaulting police personnel, damaging Government property or disturbing public order.
Following Monday’s clashes, in which Delhi Police said more than 118 security personnel were injured, and over 20 police vehicles were damaged, security has been heightened across New Delhi and other sensitive districts with additional police and paramilitary deployment, multi-layered barricades and intensified vehicle checks.
