PM Modi urges citizens to stay hydrated and take precautions amid severe heatwave in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a public advisory urging citizens across India to take precautions amid the ongoing severe heatwave affecting several regions of the country.
In a series of posts on X, the Prime Minister appealed to people to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, and remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, nausea, and extreme fatigue.
He stressed that timely care and awareness can prevent serious health risks, especially for children, the elderly, and outdoor workers who are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures. He also encouraged people to check on elderly family members and ensure they remain safe and hydrated.
“Please stay hydrated, keep water with you when stepping out. Offer a glass of water to others,” PM Modi said, highlighting the importance of community care during extreme weather conditions.
The Prime Minister further advised citizens to move affected individuals to shaded or cool areas in case of heat exhaustion and provide fluids such as water or ORS immediately. He warned that ignoring early symptoms could lead to heatstroke and other serious complications.
Extending his appeal beyond humans, PM Modi also urged citizens to care for animals and birds by placing water in accessible areas such as balconies, terraces, and outside homes, calling it an act of compassion during harsh weather.
The advisory comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) continues to warn of above-normal temperatures across several states. Authorities have activated heat action plans, focusing on public awareness campaigns, emergency medical preparedness, and cooling centres.
Officials have also advised people to wear light clothing, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (12 noon to 4 pm), and maintain adequate hydration throughout the day as the heatwave conditions are expected to persist.
