Opposition stage sit-in near PM residence; both Houses adjourned

Opposition leaders including Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi marched to the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon after both Houses of Parliament were adjourned on Tuesday, July 21. The leaders demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In a post on X, Rahul Gandhi said that they marched to demand answers and an apology for the police crackdown against students on Monday, July 20.

"We marched to PM Modi's house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday. The government doesn't want to take any accountability nor does it want to have a debate on it in Parliament," Rahul said on X. "PM and HM must resign for destroying the future of India's youth," he added.

Ahead of the day's session that was adjourned, Rahul Gandhi along with other Opposition MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. They had urged him to allow a discussion in Parliament on the police brutality unleashed on students yesterday, July 20, during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ March led by the Cockroach Janta Partry (CJP), a satirical student movement led by Abhijeet Dipke. Members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from AAP, including Sanjay Singh, have also reached the site, and were seen raising slogans against the crackdown.

The Lok Sabha proceedings on Tuesday, July 21, began with uproar and sloganeering by Opposition members. The In-Chair for the Lok Sabha, Dilip Saikia appealed to the members to take their seats and said that bringing banners, posters and black cloth to the floor of Parliament is against Parliament rules. Meanwhile, the situation was the same in the Rajya Sabha, where Deputy Chairman Harivansh appealed to the members to maintain decorum, following which, both the houses were adjourned. 

Talking to the media outside Parliament on Tuesday, July 21, Rahul said, "Modi ji has not even apologised for what happened yesterday. The youth are protesting against the education and testing system. The whole country knows that the education and testing system is hollowed out by termites. Why is the Prime Minister silent?."

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said “on the NEET examination, the Prime Minister said the government acted immediately after reports of the paper leak surfaced, and 13 people were arrested and sent to jail. At the same time, to ensure that students’ future was not affected, the NEET re-examination was given priority, conducted successfully, and the results were declared without delay,” news agency PTI reported. His statement came after a crucial NDA meeting ‘Mangal Milan,’ that happened earlier in the day. 

Parliament will now reconvene at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22. As per the listed agenda for Day 2 of the Monsoon Session, the Union government was to table the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Rajya Sabha, a move to grant statutory protection to the National Song Vande Mataram. The Lok Sabha was scheduled to take up the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, for consideration and passing.
