Open pit kills child, contractor arrested in Greater Noida
A contractor was arrested on Sunday after a six-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled pit dug for boring work at Kaladham Colony in Greater Noida, where the child was playing with other children near the unguarded excavation on Saturday evening at around 7 pm, police said.
The boy, identified as Avyaan Surya, fell into the water-filled pit and was pulled out by family members, who rushed him to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. The victim was playing cricket with his friends when he fell into the pit at the Kaladham Society, a colony for artists. The pit was dug by the Greater Noida Authority for boring work and was filled with water.
The contractor responsible for the boring work was arrested on Sunday in connection with the incident. The incident raises immediate questions about the absence of any protective measures around the pit at the time the child fell. Boring pits dug for groundwater extraction or underground utility work are a common feature in developing residential colonies across the National Capital Region.
Deaths of children in unsecured construction pits, open borewells, and uncovered excavations have been a recurring and preventable tragedy across urban and semi-urban India for decades. Court orders and municipal guidelines across multiple states have repeatedly mandated that such excavations be secured, yet enforcement has remained inconsistent and the pattern of fatalities has continued.
