NIA arrests four in West Bengal over terror links
The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on Tuesday, arrested four persons, including an Imam of a mosque, for their alleged links with terror groups, sources said.
The NIA arrested Piar Mohammad Sheikh, the Imam of a mosque in Palishgram village under the Mangalkot Police Station in East Burdwan district. Sources said the NIA team had seized certain materials, including a diary and a mobile phone, from the Imam. The sleuths found several names of Bangladeshi nationals in his diary, insiders said, adding they suspected the man’s connection with Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh.
The investigators were also trying to find out the reasons behind his regular visits to the neighbouring country. The arrest followed a tip-off from Assam. Raids were also conducted in South 24 Parganas district. The agency also arrested Jumman Sheikh, a tailor from Mithapukur; Shahrul Purkait from Balarampur; Abdul Rafiq from Narendrapur — all in South 24 Parganas district.
The area from where he was picked up is not very far from Khagragarh, where two terror modules were killed while making bombs. The incident occurred in 2014, leading to the arrest of several terror modules.
