New book chronicles IITs’ journey from freedom struggle symbol to global innovation powerhouse

A new book, IIT: The Story of India’s Most Prestigious Educational Ecosystem, by Prabhat Kumar, IRS officer and Chairman of PanIIT Alumni India, offers a sweeping account of the evolution of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) from a post-Independence nation-building project to a globally influential educational and innovation ecosystem.
The book traces the origins of the IIT movement to 1951, when the foundation stone of IIT Kharagpur was laid at the site of the former Hijli Detention Camp in West Bengal. The transformation of a colonial prison into a centre of learning was seen as deeply symbolic of India’s future — a catalyst for scientific and technological progress.
Today, India’s 23 IITs boast more than 500,000 alumni worldwide, many of whom occupy leadership positions in technology, business, government and academia. The book highlights IITians’ contributions to landmark national initiatives, including Aadhaar, UPI, space missions, infrastructure development and the country’s emerging artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Kumar argues that the IIT story has entered a new phase marked by rapid expansion, the rise of a multi-billion-rupee coaching industry, growing mental health concerns, and a flourishing startup culture. The book examines these developments through a combination of personal narratives, data-driven analysis and policy insights.
The book sheds light on deep-tech innovations emerging from IIT campuses, including advancements in space technology, agricultural intelligence, and Indian-language AI models. It also addresses the challenges facing students, including academic pressure and mental health struggles, while documenting efforts by institutions to strengthen support systems.
Looking ahead to 2047, the book outlines an ambitious vision for IITs as global centres of research, innovation and talent, positioning them as key drivers of India’s aspiration to become a developed nation.
