New-age technologies reshape neurological care

Artemis Hospitals hosted a discussion on new technologies in neurological care. Dr Aditya Gupta, Chairperson of Neurosurgery and CNS Radiosurgery and Co-Chief of the CyberKnife Centre, explained how recent advances in neurosurgery and precision radiosurgery are creating new treatment options for patients with complex neurological conditions.
Dr Aditya Gupta, who trained at AIIMS, has over thirty years of experience in neurosurgery. He specialises in treating brain and spine disorders, movement disorders, epilepsy, and performing radiosurgery.
Dr Gupta discussed Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), CyberKnife radiosurgery, and why a team approach matters in neurological care. He said DBS has become a key treatment for some patients with certain movement disorders.
Dr Gupta explained that in this procedure, a thin wire is placed in a specific part of the brain and connected to a device. This device sends controlled electrical signals to help manage abnormal brain activity.
He described CyberKnife, a precise, non-invasive type of radiosurgery used for certain brain and spinal conditions. Unlike traditional surgery, it does not need any cuts or a rigid frame around the patient's head. Depending on the case, treatment can be finished in a few sessions, each lasting about 40 minutes.
Dr Gupta said that CyberKnife is not just for cancer. It can also treat some cases of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and certain non-cancerous growths. It can even treat some tumours outside the brain, like those in the lungs. Artemis Hospitals has done over 2,500 CyberKnife procedures.
Dr Gupta said the condition can affect much more than a patient's physical health, with repeated seizures often impacting confidence, daily routine, work, studies and social interactions. He stressed that managing complex neurological conditions requires coordinated work involving different specialists and careful assessment of each patient.
The session showed how precision technology, brain stimulation, and less invasive treatments are becoming more important in modern neurological care.
