Nepal floods : Woman rescued alive after being trapped under debris for 10 days
A 60-year-old woman was rescued alive from the top floor of a four-storey house after being trapped under mud and debris for 10 days following devastating flash floods in Nepal’s Nuwakot district, officials said.
The woman, identified as Chandika Shrestha, was rescued from her house in Bidur town by a nine-member Armed Police Force (APF) team.
A video shared by Nepal Police on social media showed rescuers digging through mud and sludge before pulling Shrestha out through a window on the top floor.
Shrestha was found unconscious. The video showed her slowly regaining consciousness as rescuers covered her with a blanket and jacket.
Following the rescue, she was flown by helicopter to the Nepali Army’s Maithili Barracks in Trishuli for initial treatment, APF deputy spokesperson Shailendra Thapa said.
She is being flown to Kathmandu for further medical treatment, Thapa said.
The rescue comes days after flash floods triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26 devastated towns and villages across northern and central Nepal.
The floods left more than 1,300 people dead, while around 5,000 remain missing.
The Bhotekoshi River, flowing south from the Himalayan border region, carried floodwaters downstream, sweeping away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaging hydropower projects across several districts.
More than 13,000 people have been rescued so far, officials said.
