MP police issue 24-point social media guidelines focusing on data security, conduct

The Madhya Pradesh Police has introduced a detailed social media policy for its personnel, focusing on data security, professional conduct and responsible use of digital platforms.

The 24-point “MP Police Social Media Guideline-2026” has been issued by Director General of Police Kailash Makwana and will be applicable to personnel across police stations, armed police units, training institutions, Police Headquarters and other departments. The new guidelines specifically restrict police personnel from uploading confidential Government documents or sensitive information on artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Officers and employees have been directed not to scan, screenshot or share any Government document containing confidential or security-related information on social media platforms or AI applications.

The guidelines also prohibit sharing details of sensitive assignments, operational activities or locations online. Personnel posted at sensitive workplaces have been advised to keep location services and geo-tagging features disabled while using social media.

The department has placed restrictions on posting reels, photographs, videos and audio clips while wearing police uniforms or during official duties if such content affects the dignity of the force. Any inappropriate content already uploaded has been ordered to be removed immediately.

Police personnel have also been barred from sharing visuals related to weapons training, firing exercises, raids, drills and other sensitive operations on social media platforms.

The move aims to prevent disclosure of operational details and maintain security protocols. The guidelines further regulate monetisation and personal publicity on digital platforms. Without prior Government approval, police personnel cannot create social media accounts for paid promotions, commercial activities or income generation. Promotion of personal businesses, companies, products or services through official or personal social media accounts has also been prohibited.

The order states that such activities would amount to a violation of Rule 16 of the Madhya Pradesh Civil Services Conduct Rules. Personnel or their dependents earning income through social media platforms have been instructed to submit complete details to the department within 30 days. The guidelines also emphasise that achievements of the police department should be highlighted as collective achievements of the force and not as individual publicity. Officers have been restricted from making comments on Government decisions, departmental functioning or senior officers that could affect the dignity of their position.

The use of political party logos, organisational symbols or symbols of protest as profile pictures has also been prohibited. Personnel cannot participate in online polls or voting through official police accounts without permission. The department has directed all units to ensure strict implementation of the new guidelines.
