19 children died due to contaminated water in Madhya Pradesh, claims LoP Singhar

Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Umang Singhar on Friday claimed that 19 children have died following an outbreak of illness linked to contaminated water in tribal-dominated villages of Balaghat district, and accused the state government of concealing the actual toll.

Calling the situation "extremely worrying", the Leader of Opposition in state assembly visited the affected Kundekasa, Bondari and Korka villages and took stock of the situation.

He also met ailing children from these villages undergoing treatment at a hospital, and enquired about their condition as well as the healthcare facilities available there, a statement issued by his office said.

Singhar met families affected by the outbreak.

Local villagers claimed the illness had been spreading for several days due to contaminated water and infection, resulting in the deaths of 19 children in nearby villages so far.

They also alleged the administration was trying to hide the figures.

Singhar demanded immediate health screening, treatment, adequate nutrition and clean drinking water for residents of the affected Baiga tribal-dominated villages.

"The situation is extremely worrying amid apprehensions of contaminated water and malnutrition in the affected villages. The government should immediately conduct health check-ups of every person, particularly children," he said.

The Congress leader demanded proper and free treatment for ailing children, adequate nutrition and clean drinking water, besides financial assistance to the affected families.

He said the government must ensure every child receives proper treatment and no family loses a child due to lack of medical care.

Singhar also demanded an impartial probe into possible administrative lapses and strict action against officials and others found responsible.

The LoP alleged the BJP government's negligence had led to the deaths of 19 children in Baiga tribal-dominated areas.

"The government is trying to conceal the actual number of deaths instead of bringing the real figures before the people," he alleged.

Singhar also targeted Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, saying he was taking out a Tiranga Yatra but had no time to "wipe the tears" of tribal families and save children's lives.

"CM Mohan Yadav talks about tribal pride. He should answer what he has done for these tribal children," Singhar said.

MLAs Sanjay Uikey, Madhu Bhagat, Anubha Munjare and Vivek Vicky Patel accompanied Singhar during the visit.
