Maruti-Suzuki India crosses one lakh exports to Japan
Maruti Suzuki India Limited announced that cumulative exports of its Made-in-India Jimny 5-door, Fronx and e VITARA to Japan have crossed the 1 lakh unit mark. This milestone is a landmark moment given Japan’s status as one of the world’s most competitive and technologically advanced automobile markets.
The export journey began with the Fronx in August 2024, followed by the Jimny 5-door in December 2024.
The portfolio expanded further in September 2025 with the addition of the e VITARA, Maruti Suzuki’s first battery electric vehicle, reinforcing India’s growing role as a global manufacturing base for Suzuki. Notably, the Jimny 5-door and e VITARA are built exclusively in India.
This rising acceptance of Indian-built vehicles has pushed Japan to become Maruti Suzuki’s second-largest export market by volume in FY 2025-26, a position it has held through April-August of FY 2026-27.
The three models have also helped parent company Suzuki Motor Corporation become Japan’s top vehicle importer in FY 2025-26, overtaking several established global rivals, with Maruti Suzuki-made vehicles accounting for nearly all of Suzuki’s imports into Japan that year.
Commenting on the achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, said the milestone reflects India’s manufacturing excellence and marks a full-circle moment for the India-Japan partnership, one that began with Suzuki’s decision to manufacture cars in India and has now resulted in Indian-made vehicles winning over discerning Japanese buyers.
