Mamata accuses Suvendu of threatening her with house arrest
War of words ensued between Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee, with the latter wondering whether she had been kept under house arrest after the Bengal Chief Minister asked her to remain indoors instead of creating a nuisance for his Government.
In what the Trinamool Congress chief described as a “new low” in Indian politics, Banerjee alleged that Adhikari was “threatening me with house arrest,” after the Chief Minister asked her to remain indoors.
Suvendu Adhikari “while seated in a Government office, has brazenly threatened me, publicly declaring that he will ensure I cannot even leave my home,” Banerjee alleged, saying she would like to call upon the President of India and the people of the country to see things for themselves.
Apparently targeting the Chief Minister, she said, “political power can scare you for some time”, but it was the people who give the final reply against “arrogance.”
The dispute comes amid rising embers over the alleged “selective” and “delayed” disbursement of monthly financial assistance of `3,000 for eligible women in Bengal under the Annapurna Bhandar scheme.
The war of words also ensued in the wake of Banerjee saying that she would not retire from politics and that she would live till she saw the end of the BJP from the country.
Reacting to the allegations levelled by the TMC chairperson regarding “mismanagement” of the Annapurna Bhandar scheme and resultant protests, Adhikari had allegedly said that there were lots of false charges being levelled by his predecessor, asking her to refrain from sullying the State politics and remain indoors instead. He would ensure that Banerjee remained indoors, the TMC chief alleged.
Adhikari had said, “Let her stay on Facebook in the afternoon; she doesn’t need to come out on the streets. I will make arrangements to ensure that she cannot come out on the streets.”
Referring to the delayed implementation of the Annapurna scheme, Adhikari said that everyone save the ineligible candidates would get the benefits of the scheme. “There is no point pressurising me because this scheme would apply to only those people who are eligible,” Adhikari said.
Incidentally, a number of TMC leaders, including former Ministers who have been taken into custody by the police on various charges of corruption, violence, etc after the fall of the Trinamool Government early this year there have been several incidents of egg attacks on them from the public.
Though the BJP have distanced itself from the egg controversy, describing the egg-hurling incidents as a result of public outrage against the TMC misrule, the Trinamool leaders have accused BJP for organizing such attacks.
