Three-month-old girl sexually assaulted in UP's Mainpuri, neighbour arrested
A three-month-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 35-year-old neighbour in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district, police said on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Jetendra, was arrested on Wednesday following a raid at his suspected hideouts, police said.
The incident took place late Tuesday evening when the infant was at home with her parents in the Bewar area, according to police.
Her mother was cooking dinner while her father was engaged in household chores when the accused, who lived in the neighbourhood and was known to the family, entered the house, police said.
According to Bewar police station in-charge Anil Kumar Singh, Jetendra began playing with the baby before taking her outside. Since he was known to the family, they did not suspect anything was wrong, he said.
Police said the accused returned with the child around half an hour later, placed her on the cot and left.
The infant subsequently began crying inconsolably and her mother noticed that she was seriously injured. The family immediately took her to the district hospital, from where doctors referred her to Saifai Medical College in critical condition.
She is undergoing treatment, police said.
The girl's father lodged a complaint on Wednesday, following which police registered an FIR against Jetendra under relevant provisions of law.
The accused was subsequently arrested and further investigation is underway.
