Magnitude 7.1 earthquake shakes southern Japan, tsunami advisory issued

A preliminary magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Kumamoto on Japan's southern main island of Kyushu late Tuesday afternoon, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami advisory, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km (6 miles) below the sea surface, the JMA said.
Authorities issued the advisory following the quake, with residents in potentially affected coastal areas urged to remain alert for possible tsunami activity.
