Three detained after alleged non-veg material thrown near Ganesh event in Madannapet

Three residents of a housing society in Hyderabad's Madannapet were taken into police custody on Sunday after a packet containing bones and food waste was allegedly thrown near an Annadanam distribution area during Ganesh immersion celebrations, police said.

Charminar Zone DCP Kiran Khare said the incident took place around 3 pm at the 2 BHK Police Housing Society in Madannapet. According to the preliminary information received by police, some residents allegedly threw non-vegetarian material, which the DCP described as being "like beef", from the housing society while Ganesh immersion and an Annadanam programme were underway nearby.

Police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and detained three residents. They were identified as Mohammad Imran Qureshi, Arshiya Begum and Sameena, the DCP said.

Khare said all three were residents of the housing society and that stringent legal action would be taken against them. He added that strong sections would be invoked based on the investigation. 

The alleged incident led to protests by BJP leaders and Hindu organisations in Chanchalguda. Protesters alleged that the act was an attempt to defile Lord Ganesh's prasad and raised slogans demanding immediate action against those responsible.

Police personnel were deployed at the spot after the protests. Khare said the situation was later brought under control and traffic movement had returned to normal.

Police are investigating how the packet reached the area and who was responsible for throwing it. Further action will follow based on the findings of the inquiry.  (with inputs from media organisations)
