Lok Sabha proceedings adjourned till 2 pm amid opposition uproar
Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm on Tuesday, minutes after the House convened, amid protests by opposition members seeking a response from the government over police action against protesting students.
Speaker Om Birla urged members to allow Question Hour to continue and said a discussion on the anti-paper leak Amendment Bill would be taken up at 2 pm.
With the opposition refusing to relent, Birla adjourned the proceedings.
The Centre had introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday, proposing stricter punishment of up to 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 50 lakh for offences related to paper leaks.
The Bill was introduced by Minister of State for PMO Jitendra Singh amid opposition protests and sloganeering over the alleged police crackdown on students during the July 20 protest march to Parliament and in other parts of the country.
No discussion could take place on the Bill as the opposition continued to press for a response from the government.
The opposition has been raising the NEET paper leak issue since the Monsoon session began on July 20. As a result, no legislative business has been taken up so far, apart from the introduction of two Bills.
