Ladakh DGP Mukesh Singh transferred to Manipur as New Police Chief

The Centre has approved the inter-cadre deputation of Ladakh DGP Mukesh Singh to the Manipur cadre for three years, paving the way for him to become the state’s next Director General of Police.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) cleared the move for the 1996-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer in relaxation of standard conditions and in public interest. The decision came just a day after incumbent Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh was elevated to Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat.
A 1996-batch officer with a BTech from IIT Delhi, Mukesh Singh brings extensive experience in counter-insurgency and internal security. He has served as SSP in militancy-affected districts of Jammu and Kashmir, as IG Jammu, ADG ITBP, and in senior roles with the National Investigation Agency.
His proven ability in handling complex security issues in sensitive border regions is expected to strengthen policing in Manipur. Rajiv Singh, a 1993-batch Tripura cadre IPS officer, took charge as Manipur DGP in June 2023, weeks after ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
He managed operations during the most turbulent period. Nonetheless, the state continues to face deep ethnic fault lines, buffer zones, sporadic clashes, and abductions even after President’s Rule ended in February 2026 and a new Government took office.
