Kapil Sibal calls Maurya's madrasa remarks communal, asks 'Are chanda chors patriotic?'

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Wednesday criticised Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya over his remarks on madrasa education, calling them communal and asking whether "chanda chors" were patriotic.

The remarks came a day after Maurya claimed that people educated in madrasas "develop a terrorist-like mindset" and neither chant "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" nor sing "Vande Mataram".

In a post on X , Sibal described the comments as a "communal statement" reflecting a "warped mindset".

"Are 'Chanda Chors' patriotic? This country deserves better!" the Independent Rajya Sabha MP said.

Sibal's remarks come amid the opposition's attacks on the BJP over the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
