Nepal floods : Jharkhand seeks information on residents affected by disaster

The Jharkhand government on Thursday sought information from Indian consular authorities in Nepal about workers, tourists and other people from the state who may have been affected by the devastating floods and landslides in the Himalayan country.

The move comes as Nepal continues to grapple with the disaster, with the death toll rising to 177 and more than 300 Indian tourists among those reported missing.

The state government has written to Indian consular officials, the Protector of Emigrants and the Consulate General of Nepal in Kolkata, seeking details of Jharkhand-origin people who have been rescued, are missing or remain stranded, an official said.

“We have sought information on our citizens stranded or affected by the floods and landslides, including those rescued, missing or stranded,” the official said.

No information had been received from the authorities so far, the official added.

The state government has asked for details on the whereabouts and condition of affected people so their families can be informed and assistance can be arranged.

Officials are also working to establish how many people from Jharkhand were present in the flood-hit areas of Nepal and may need help.

Rescue and relief operations are continuing across the affected regions, where floods and landslides have damaged roads and other infrastructure.
