Japan honours Hyderabad-based Ikebanist Nirmala Agarwal for promoting India-Japan friendship

The Consulate-General of Japan has honoured Hyderabad-based Ikebanist Nirmala Agarwal with the Consul General’s Commendation Award for her contribution to promoting friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and India.
The award was presented by the Consulate-General at a ceremony held at Cyber Garden in Hyderabad on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
A practitioner of Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, Agarwal began her journey with the art in 2000. She holds the Associate First Master degree from Japan’s Ohara School of Ikebana and has been associated with the art form for over two decades.
She is currently serving her second term as president of the Hyderabad Chapter of the Ohara School of Ikebana. During her tenure, the chapter hosted the school’s Headmaster in Hyderabad for a demonstration and workshop for the first time and organised its first Pan-India Ikebana Seminar in the city.
Agarwal has participated in several regional and international Ikebana conferences and conducted demonstrations and workshops for schools, educational institutions and women’s organisations, helping introduce the Japanese art form to wider audiences.
She views Ikebana as more than flower arrangement, describing it as an artistic discipline that expresses emotions and ideas through the thoughtful placement of flowers, foliage and branches. Its emphasis on harmony, balance, proportion, minimalism and simplicity reflects aesthetic values shared by Japanese and Indian cultures.
“I am truly honoured and grateful to receive this recognition. My sincere thanks to the Japanese Consulate and everyone who has supported my journey in Ikebana. This honour inspires me to continue promoting this beautiful Japanese art form. Every flower tells a story, and Ikebana has taught me the art of listening to nature,” Agarwal said.
