Hindu group 'bars' non-Hindus from Garba events, deploys teams to 'monitor' celebrations

Banners prohibiting non-Hindus from entering Garba venues have been put up at several locations in Jaipur by a Hindu organisation, which says it has deployed 27 teams to monitor the celebrations during Navratri.
The banners, installed by the Sanatan Suraksha Dal at various Garba venues across the city, carry the message, “Entry of non-Hindus prohibited in Garba pandals”.
The organisation’s founder, Ravi Gautam, said it had launched a campaign ahead of Navratri and appealed to Garba organisers through social media to preserve religious traditions and cultural practices during the festivities.
He said 27 teams had been assigned to different areas of Jaipur. Their responsibilities include staying in touch with Garba organisers and keeping watch on the events.
Gautam also urged organisers to verify participants’ identity cards and arrange for tilak to be applied to their foreheads and kalava (sacred thread) to be tied around their wrists.
“Garba is not merely a dance event. It is associated with religious faith and cultural traditions, and its sanctity must be maintained,” he said.
