India’s book publishing market projected to reach Rs 2 lakh crore by 2030-31

India’s book publishing market is projected to reach Rs 2 lakh crore by 2030-31, according to the India Book Market Report 2026-2030, released in New Delhi by the Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP) in partnership with NielsenIQ BookData.
The report examines the growth prospects of India’s print, digital, educational and scholarly publishing sectors. It also focuses on Indian-language publishing, education, research, artificial intelligence, copyright, creator rights and government policy. The report describes India as a market with significant potential to become a globally important knowledge and publishing hub.
It highlights opportunities for investment and innovation while stressing the need for sustainable growth, stronger copyright protection and responsible adoption of new technologies.
Vikrant Mathur, Executive Director of NielsenIQ BookData, India & GCC, said the report provides a clearer understanding of the scale, structure and evolution of India’s publishing industry. He said the study combines market data and industry expertise to provide insights that can assist businesses, policymakers and other stakeholders.
Pranav Gupta, Vice President of the Federation of Indian Publishers, said reliable data and research are essential for the industry’s future.
He described publishing as fundamental to India’s intellectual, educational and cultural development.
The report has also received support from international publishing organisations.
José Borghino, Secretary General of the International Publishers Association, welcomed the updated study, noting the importance of reliable industry data in understanding market growth and future policy.
Caroline Sutton, CEO of the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers, said India has strong foundations for becoming a larger force in global academic publishing, but emphasised the importance of copyright protection, sustainable business models and research integrity.
Anita Huss-Ekerhult of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations noted that India has more than 26,000 publishers, while its print market is growing at nearly 11% CAGR.
