IndianOil showcases operational green sewage treatment plant on World Environment Day

Marking World Environment Day 2026, IndianOil’s Refineries Division highlighted a significant sustainability milestone with the successful operation of a first-of-its-kind Green Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at its Haldia Refinery in West Bengal.
The innovative facility, powered by Integrated Wetland Technology (IWT), has been operational since January 26, 2026, and is already delivering measurable environmental benefits.
The achievement was showcased through an audio-visual presentation released by Arvind Kumar, Director (Refineries), IndianOil, at the company’s Refineries Headquarters in New Delhi.
Developed in collaboration with the Society for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (SINE) at IIT Bombay, the green STP utilizes natural processes involving wetland vegetation, filtration media, and microbial activity to treat sewage. Unlike conventional treatment systems, the technology requires significantly lower energy consumption and generates fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
According to IndianOil, the plant’s performance over the past four months has demonstrated reduced power usage, near-zero maintenance requirements, and efficient wastewater treatment. The treated water is being reused for horticultural purposes within the refinery premises, supporting the company’s broader resource conservation goals.
Encouraged by the successful implementation at Haldia, IndianOil’s Refineries Division plans to replicate the model across its refinery network, aiming to scale up environmental benefits and promote sustainable wastewater management practices nationwide.
In another sustainability-focused initiative announced on the occasion, the Refineries Division launched a pilot programme to recycle end-of-life Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR) suits used by refinery personnel. The project seeks to reduce industrial waste by repurposing used safety apparel, advancing the company’s circular economy objectives.
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, Kumar also unveiled specially designed theme posters aimed at reinforcing environmental awareness and responsibility among employees and stakeholders.
The initiatives underscore IndianOil’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainable technologies and circular economy practices into its refinery operations while contributing to the country’s environmental goals.
