Indian Embassy in US rebukes NYT over 'Pakistani Kashmir' headline

The Indian Embassy in the U.S. on Wednesday objected to a New York Times headline referring to "Pakistani Kashmir," calling it "misleading and incorrect."

"Misleading and incorrect headline by @nytimes. There is no Pakistani Kashmir, only Pakistan-occupied Kashmir," the embassy said in a social media post.

The embassy said the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh "have been, are and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India."

"Pakistan has illegally occupied parts of these territories and is now using violence against the occupied people," it said.

The remarks came after a New York Times report on violent clashes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

According to the report, which cited local officials and independent estimates, at least 30 people, including protesters, law enforcement personnel and bystanders, had died in clashes since early June and before the latest round of violence on Monday.

The Joint Awami Action Committee, a coalition of activist groups, has been holding protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir since last month over 12 contentious seats in the region's legislative assembly. It alleges that the establishment manoeuvres these seats to install a prime minister of its choosing.

India has said the protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are "the direct consequences of Pakistan's economic exploitation, its denial of the people's fundamental rights, and its administrative oppression."
