India Protests Tanker Attack, Summons US Envoy
India has lodged a strong diplomatic protest with the United States over the attack on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello off the coast of Oman, summoning US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks and issuing a formal demarche amid concerns over the safety of Indian crew members.
According to sources, the vessel suffered a major engine-room fire approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Sohar port in Oman following what maritime security agencies described as a suspected missile strike. The incident occurred in the strategically sensitive Gulf of Oman region, close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.
Reports indicate that the tanker issued a distress call stating that its engine room had been hit.
The tanker carried 28 crew, including 24 Indians. Rescue operations coordinated by Omani authorities have brought most of the crew to safety.
While search efforts continue for those reported missing. India is closely monitoring the situation through its diplomatic missions and maritime agencies.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasising that attacks on commercial shipping threaten regional stability and endanger civilian seafarers.
New Delhi has called for strict adherence to international maritime norms and the protection of freedom of navigation in international waters.
The latest episode comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia and increased enforcement actions against vessels suspected of violating sanctions-related restrictions. Several recent incidents involving merchant shipping in the Gulf region have raised concerns among maritime operators and Governments alike. Reports of missile attacks on commercial vessels carrying Indian crew members have prompted India to intensify diplomatic engagement with regional stakeholders and major powers.
Officials said India’s immediate priority remains the safety and welfare of its seafarers. The Government is coordinating with Omani authorities and international maritime agencies to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack and secure the safe return of all Indian nationals affected by the incident.
