India launchs UPI in Greece, expanding digital payment network to 10 countries
India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has officially gone live in Greece, marking another milestone in the global expansion of the country's digital payment ecosystem. The launch enables eligible Indian users to make instant, secure and low-cost digital payments while travelling or doing business in Greece.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced the rollout during his official visit to Athens. He witnessed a live demonstration of the partnership between Greece's Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), which powers the UPI services in the country.
Sharing the update, Goyal said the launch represents another important step in taking India's digital payment infrastructure to the global stage. He noted that UPI offers fast, secure and seamless transactions while significantly reducing the cost of cross-border payments.
With Greece joining the network, UPI is now available in 10 countries in various forms, supporting merchant payments, cross-border remittances and digital transactions for Indian travellers, businesses and the diaspora. The expansion is part of India's broader effort to strengthen international financial connectivity through its homegrown payment platform.
The Greece rollout follows UPI's recent expansion in France and Seychelles, underscoring India's growing digital footprint across Europe and other regions. Officials believe the move will further boost tourism, trade and economic cooperation between India and Greece while making overseas payments more convenient for Indian users.
