India is strong candidate for 2036 Olympics, talent hunt for 5 to 15: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is a strong candidate to host the 2036 Olympics. To boost the country’s chances, a nationwide search will look for talented children between 5 and 15 years old.
Speaking from the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, PM Modi said the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, launched in 2014, has been highly successful in supporting athletes.
“India is making its mark in sports. Our national anthem is played often, and our flag is raised frequently. TOPS has been very successful. With programs like Khelo India Games, University Games, Beach Games, Winter Games, and improvements in sports training, medicine, and nutrition, India is moving forward quickly,” he said.
“India’s performance is getting better, and we are strong candidates to host the 2036 Olympics. We will also host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
The Olympics have about 40 sports and nearly 350 events. Sadly, we cannot compete in at least two-thirds of these events because we do not qualify.”
“We want to take part in at least three-fourths of the events at the 2036 Olympics. To do this, we are launching a nationwide search for talented children aged 5 to 15. Those chosen will get special training to become world-class athletes,” he added. India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, which is also bidding for the 2036 Olympics.
