IIT Delhi PhD scholar dies at AIIMS after being found injured at rented home; abetment of suicide case registered

A PhD scholar at IIT Delhi died at AIIMS on Saturday, where he had been receiving treatment since August 18 after being found unconscious and injured at his rented accommodation in Munirka Village in south Delhi, police said Sunday.
Police said a case of abetment of suicide has been registered under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Kishangarh police station. However, they did not specify whether the case names any individual or individuals.
The exact circumstances surrounding the scholar's death remain unclear. The registration of the abetment of suicide case indicates that he had allegedly attempted suicide at his rented accommodation and later died from his injuries while undergoing treatment at AIIMS.
Door found locked from inside
Police said the scholar was discovered unconscious and injured inside his rented house in Munirka Village on August 18.
According to the police statement, the door was locked from the inside and neighbours broke it open. Police then took him to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.
"The door of the house was also locked from inside and the same was broken open by neighbours. The victim was immediately shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment by police. He remained under treatment for more than 45 days and expired at AIIMS (Trauma Centre) on October 3," Southwest district police said.
The FIR was registered following directions from the Supreme Court and based on a complaint filed by the Security Officer of IIT Delhi, police said.
Police also clarified that the incident did not take place on the IIT Delhi campus.
"During the proceedings, no suspicion or allegation was raised against any person by the family or witnesses as the injured was alone in the house, which is also evident from the CCTV footage of the camera installed outside the house," the police statement said.
Third alleged IIT Delhi student suicide this year
The death is the third alleged student suicide linked to IIT Delhi reported this year. The two earlier incidents took place on the institute's campus.
On August 22, a 31-year-old MSc Physics student died after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of the Lecture Hall Complex (LHC) at IIT Delhi.
Earlier, in March 2026, a 19-year-old first-year BTech student allegedly died by suicide in his room on the IIT Delhi campus.
